Pathological Considerations

Psychiatric and developmental disorders may be caused by disruption of the functional connectivity [30]. Alternations have been demonstrated in conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia. It is possible that these disturbances originate in fetal life.

We have also showed that some of the premature infants that we studied were different, as they showed decreased connectivity in the visual and dorsal attention networks compared to the control groups and decreased connectivity in the auditory/language network compared to the full-term group. These infants were born preterm and also had retarded growth. Decreased connectivity between the auditory/language seed and the insular and cingulate cortices was found in these infants. They were more likely to display early autism features (Padilla, to be publ.).
